NTC Appoints New Principal

Posted On: 18th Feb 2012

The Board of Governors of NTC, Manchester, announces the election of Revd Dr Deirdre Brower Latz as the next Principal of the college. She takes on the role following the upcoming retirement of Revd Dr David McCulloch. Brower Latz, a Canadian by birth, completed her BA (Pastoral Theology) and MA (Christian Holiness) at NTC, and her PhD at the University of Manchester. Her particular areas of research interest include Wesley, Wesleyan theology, contextual and practical theology and the area of social justice. Dr Brower Latz brings extensive ministry, teaching, and administrative experience to the post. She served as General NYI President for four years and is in wide demand as a speaker and teacher. She has served on the faculty of NTC, Manchester, since 2000, most recently as head of the Practical and Social Theology subject area. Brower Latz has pastored in Bristol, England, and, since 2002, has combined her NTC post with that of part-time pastoral team leader at Longsight Church of the Nazarene, a diverse urban congregation in Manchester. Her husband, Andrew, is currently pursuing research in political theology. Brower Latz’s appointment comes a century after the ordination of Olive Winchester in the Parkhead Church of the Nazarene: the first woman ordained in any denomination in the UK. A conference marking this event, co-sponsored by NTC, will be held in Glasgow later this year (11th – 13th May). Revd David Montgomery, chair of the Board of Governors, comments: “NTC is blessed to have such a creative and committed leader as Deirdre Brower Latz to take on this role. She embodies the college’s vision of committed, engaged, articulate ministry blended with a whole-hearted love for research that serves the church and the kingdom.” read more »

NTC Receives 'Highly Trusted Sponsor' Status

Posted On: 11th Aug 2011

NTC has been approved by the UK Border Agency as a 'Highly Trusted Sponsor' for Tier 4 international students. 'HTS' became a requirement for Colleges wishing to admit full-time international students this summer, and this approval from the UKBA is based on the College's consistent 'A' rating as a 'sponsor.' The College has also been accepted by the QAA (Quality Assurance Agency) as an applicant for 'Educational Oversight' ... another requirement for non-Governmental Higher Educational institutions who wish to support international students. Amidst this good news, however, is the fact that this summer's regulatory changes to student visa regulation means that full-time international students at private colleges will not be allowed to bring their dependants to the UK, or to work part-time. Students at public universities are unaffected. The College has joined with sister institutions to make representation to to the Government to address this situation, which is a particular problem for international postgraduate students. A meeting with the Minister for Immigration takes place next month. read more »

Beech Wing Project Underway

Posted On: 13th Jul 2011

The renovation of Beech Wing, the elderly student residence, is well under way. This wing of the White House was originally part of the 'coach house,' and was converted to student housing in 1959-60. To use real-estate language, it 'retains many of its original features' - such as a shared toilet, a single plug socket in each room, and occasional patches of damp. But this summer the work has started to turn this into a 21st-century dwelling (whilst retaining the particular character of the historic building). On June 20th, a 'work and witness' team from Dodge City, Kansas, descended on the college, and as soon as planning permission arrived, stripped out the old rooms, right back to the rafters, taking down the back wall to be extended. A second team, from Gallatin, Tennessee, dug foundations and trenches for plumbing, then poured footings and foundations. And teams from Pasadena and Flint, Michigan, are en route, to help with framing, flooring, walling, and who-knows-what, ready to make sure the building is ready for occupancy come September. Dr Herbert McGonigle, Principal Emeritus, who was a student when the College moved to Manchester, looked on at the work, and recalled with affection that first renovation, over fifty years ago. Funding for the project has been raised from friends of the college, and from a special 'Gift Day' from UK Nazarene Churches...but the opportunity to 'sponsor a room' will soon be available! read more »
